Structural Mechanics and Control for Adaptive Optics Using Piezoelectic Materials

Jamil RennoThe project is in support of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s desire to implement large area membrane Adaptive Optics for secondary mirrors. The research is motivated by the desire to control the optical fidelity of a reflective membrane surface using adaptive means consisting of a pressurized mirror configuration. Such a system demands the understanding and coupling of four disciplines: optics, fluids, structural dynamics and structural control. The focus is to develop physics based models that couple these disciples for the purpose of predicting design parameters and performance metrics for an adaptive optical system based on using piezoelectric actuation and sensing systems.
