WHAT WE DO
The Center for Intelligent Material Systems and Structures (CIMSS) focuses on the use and development of smart materials including device design and modeling. Applications include all fields of engineering. In addition to smart structures we also work in the area of health monitoring and diagnostics using smart structures and materials. Much of our current application work is in vibration analysis and rotating machines and in the reduction of vibration through the use of smart structures. Our structural health-monitoring program includes rotating machines, aerospace structures, automotive components and civil structures. Self-healing structures are also under investigation. We work with electroactive polymers, MR fluids, piezoelectric and shape memory materials. Investigators at CIMSS perform basic research while at the same time trying to serve the needs of practicing engineer.
In addition to research and development, CIMSS maintains an active educational mission to both educate and provide information to the community regarding smart materials and structures.
